Crabbers Want In on Federal Plan to Trace Illegal Seafood

Alaska’s crab fleet catches many of the same species as their counterparts in Russia — from red, blue and brown king crab, to snow and tanner crab. But illegal fishing in Russia is thought to account for a large part of the crab that finds its way to American consumers. BIG STORY: United States and China Coast Guards interdict vessel for illegally fishing on the high seas

JUNEAU, Alaska — The crew of Coast Guard Cutter Morgenthau transferred custody of the fishing vessel Yin Yuan, a 191-foot fishing vessel seized 625 miles east of Tokyo, Japan in the North Pacific Ocean, for large-scale high seas drift net fishing, to the China coast guard vessel 2102 on Tuesday in the East China Sea.
