Coast Guard medevacs 25 year-old- fisherman suffering from seizures from fishing vessel 58 miles off Charleston

The Coast Guard medevaced a 25 year old man from the 47′ foot F/V Golden Retriever approximately 58 miles east of Charleston, Tuesday. A Coast Guard Air Station Savannah MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew transferred the man to Medical University of South Carolina Hospital at 1:49 p.m. to receive further treatment. At approximately 11:25 a.m., Coast Guard Sector Charleston watchstanders received a call from F/V Golden Retriever crew members stating a 25 year-old crew member was reportedly suffering from seizures. The fishing vessel Golden Retriever was anchored 58 miles off Charleston due to 7 to 9-foot high seas and winds of 20 to 25 knots. >click for video< 15:21

Sources: Body found in St. Johns River near Buckman Bridge is missing crabber

According to a spokesperson for the FWC, the lead agency in the search, FWC and Clay County personnel recovered the body and took it to the Mulberry Cove Boat Ramp at Naval Air Station Jacksonville. Authorities have not yet said if the body found in the river Thursday is 20-year-old Michael Vaughn III, of St. Augustine, who disappeared on the river last week. But a family friend told News4Jax it’s him. Vaughn had worked with his dad on a crab boat since he was 8 years old and took the lead role in the family business when his dad had to deal with medical issues. >click to read< 11:53

Crab boat gets stuck near Buckman Bridge Thursday, 19-year-old fisherman still missing

The U.S. Coast Guard is now the lead agency in the search for a missing teenage ~~boater~~ fisherman who disappeared after falling overboard from a 30-foot commercial fishing vessel near the Buckman Bridge Thursday morning. Other crab boat captains searched along the southern span of the Buckman Bridge throughout the day. The Coast Guard received notification at 8 a.m. after the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office received a report from an off-duty police officer who said a vessel was unmanned and running in circles near the bridge. >click to read< 08:39

Developing: Shrimp boat stuck near Buckman Bridge, captain nowhere to be found

A shrimp boat without a captain is stuck near the Buckman Bridge Thursday morning, according to the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department. JFRD originally tweeted that they were responding to a “marine incident” at 8:53 a.m. Rescue crews say the boat is somehow connected to the bridge, either by water current or just stuck. Hurricane Irma activates Jacksonville’s riverfront

Seeking shelter from Hurricane Irma, the First Coast shrimping and fishing fleet brings a little nostalgia back to the days when downtown Jacksonville was known as being an active working waterfront. The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
