Havyard live fish carrier delivered to Norsk Fisketransport

Havyard Ship Technology has delivered its newbuild fish carrier, Namsos, to owner Norsk Fisketransport (NFT). The contract for the building of Namsos, a Havyard 587 Live Fish Carrier design, was signed in November 2013.Børge Lorentzsen, deputy CEO of NFT, said: “Havyard 587’s hull and propulsion system are also very economical in terms of fuel consumption. We can carry three times as much salmon with Havtrans and Namsos as older boats without having to use more fuel.” Read the article here 11:18

Rolls-Royce Builds a Salmon Tanker

A boat built for fish would seem to be a technology whose time will never come. But Rolls-Royce is designing one. For salmon, to be specific. Bakkafrost is paying Rolls-Royce $9.4 million to design and equip the ship, which will be built at the Tersan shipyard in Turkey and delivered in May 2015. more@businessweek 12:50

The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
