Skipper pleads not guilty in fatal Price Edward Island lobster boat collision

The skipper of a lobster boat that was involved in a collision that killed two people has pleaded not guilty. A lawyer for Clarence Barry White, 52, of Murray River, entered the not guilty pleas Tuesday in P.E.I. Supreme Court in Charlottetown. Justin MacKay of P.E.I. and Christopher Melanson of Nova Scotia died in the June, 2018 incident, in waters off Murray Harbour. Charges laid in 2018 P.E.I. lobster boat collision that took 2 lives

Clarence Barry White of Dover Road, 51, is charged with two counts of criminal negligence causing death.  He’s also charged with two counts of failing to keep lockout, under the Canada Shipping Act. The two lobster boats collided off Beach Point two years ago. Joel ’98 sank after White’s boat Forever Chasin’ Tail hit it, taking the lives of 20-year-old Justin MacKay from P.E.I. and 59-year-old Chris Melanson from Nova Scotia. Transportation Safety Board of Canada determines fishing vessel was on autopilot prior to fatal lobster boat collision

An investigation into the two-boat collision which resulted in two deaths in June, has revealed that one of the vessels was on autopilot at the time of the crash. The investigation into the collision off Beach Point, P.E.I., was conducted by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada. According to the investigation summary, on June 9 the fishing vessel Forever Chasin’ Tail, with three people on board, departed Beach Point to haul lobster traps about 14 nautical miles (nm) out. Coast Guard on scene of yacht, lobster boat collision 10 miles East of Block Island

coast guardThe Coast Guard is responding to a vessel collision about 10 miles east of Block Island this morning. The captain of the 40-foot lobster boat, Squeeze Play, used a VHF radio to contact Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England watchstanders and report Squeeze Play and the yacht, Lucia, had collided. It was reported Squeeze Play had a crew of two, and Lucia had four people aboard. The yacht was also reported to have a hole in its bow, so the crew of the Squeeze Play helped the four people transfer from Lucia to their lobster boat. The yacht is sinking, according to a press release issued by the Coast Guard. After arriving on scene, the boat crew from Station Point Judith transferred the crew members from Lucia to the 45-foot response boat and are bringing them back to port. The Squeeze Play is returning to port as well. It is unclear what time the collision occurred. link 11:30

Two injured in lobster boat collision near Owls Head

IMG_7989[1].JPGTwo people were injured when lobster boats collided Monday morning off the Muscle Ridge Islands near Owls Head and South Thomaston. The two were taken Pen Bay Medical Center with injuries not considered life-threatening after the Thrasher struck the Centerfold about 8:30 a.m., according to U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Meghan Canoon. The two 42-foot vessels were hauling traps in the fog, she said. One person on each boat was hurt. The Coast Guard has not released the names of the injured, but Centerfold owner Cyrus Sleeper said he was taken to the hospital to be checked. He said he suffered some bruises.
