Man, tired of living in U.S., steals boat to go back to Cuba, gets arrested on way
A 30-year-old Miami man was jailed in the Florida Keys after authorities say his plan to steal a commercial fishing boat in order to head back to Cuba hit a serious snag Monday. According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, a Marathon man reported that his 40-foot fishing boat was stolen that morning and said one of his former employees, Cristian Torres Perez, had recently quit “and had been talking about returning to Cuba as he disliked living in the U.S.” >click to read< 12:10
Double murderer’s cocaine case likely headed for trial
A man sentenced to life in prison in December for killing a Florida Keys couple in the fall of 2015 has so far rejected a plea offer for a cocaine trafficking conspiracy charge connected to the same case. If Jeremy Macauley, 35, doesn’t take the plea deal prosecutors offered him in May, the drug case will go to trial next month, and the names of others possibly involved in bringing more than a dozen kilos of cocaine to shore the summer before the murders will likely be discussed during testimony. Macauley was a charter boat mate on a fishing vessel docked at Whale Harbor Marina in Windley Key at the time of the slayings. Key West Couple Charged For Selling Shrimp Without License
A Key West couple is facing charges for selling shrimp without a license. Iliecer Noa, 41, and his wife Carolina Aviles, 37, allegedly posted photos of five-pound bags of shrimp for $40, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Seth Hopp saw the Facebook posts and checked with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to see if the couple had the proper licenses to sell saltwater products. Major marina fire shuts down Overseas Highway in Keys
A massive marina fire in the Florida Keys shut down the Overseas Highway early Monday around Mile Marker 47.5, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. The fire at Vaca Key Marina in Marathon started around 2:30 a.m and burned for several hours, said Deputy Becky Herrin, a sheriff’s spokeswoman. Herrin said firehoses blocked U.S.1, which stretches from Key Largo to Key West. The road reopened to traffic before 8 a.m., according to the sheriff’s office. The call came in as a boat fire, but when firefighters arrived they found a house burning along with an acre lot filled with wooden lobster traps, said Monroe County spokeswoman Cammy Clark. click here to read the story 10:18
Monroe County Sheriff’s Office dive team searches for gun used in alleged Commercial/Rec shooting incident
Members of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office dive team are assisting the Coast Guard in its investigation into what transpired last week when a mariner reported a commercial fisherman shot at him and his vessel. Coast Guard Investigative Service Resident Agent in Charge Paul Shultz and Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin confirmed Monday the Sheriff’s Office is assisting CGIS in the ongoing investigation, the details of which remain murky. There was an allegation made that the gun used in the alleged incident, a rifle, was thrown overboard by the commercial fisherman and the divers are trying to find the rifle regarding that part of the investigation, Shultz said.
