Parts of UK fishing industry feel ‘stabbed in the back’ by Brexit deal

One of the major selling points of Brexit was that it would limit access to foreign trawlers and increase quotas for the UK industry. In the end, only minor changes took place, phased in over five years. Skipper Paul Corin voted for Brexit. Now he feels betrayed and has had to sell his family-owned trawler to keep the business alive. “The exports improved after Brexit with a lot of hard work from people, but the increase in quota that we were promised just didn’t materialize. This was a family boat, but we had to sell to a bigger company. We just didn’t have enough quota to keep the vessel running and make a profit,” Corin explained. “I think we were all stabbed in the back, we were promised lots of stuff and it hasn’t materialized and it’s not going to materialize,”,,, video, >click to read< 13:00

David Stevens, who owns the Crystal Sea trawler which operates out of Newlyn, said: “We’re free market, we don’t have a fixed price for fish. “That all depends on distribution, and if we can’t distribute that fish your market will decline. The entire industry will suffer huge losses until we’re out of lockdown situations once again.” Mr Stevens says some skippers may be forced to tie their boats up for the winter. “We’re going to have to reduce the supply to keep the fish price up. But with the restaurant trade closing down around the country, we’re going to lose 30 per cent of our market price.” >click to read< 10:25

Newlyn fishermen to stage protest ahead of EU referendum

NEWLYN fishermen were among those who decorated London-bound boats to campaign against Britain remaining in the European Union last week – and they’re not finished yet. While Nigel Farage and Bob Geldof were making headlines on their flotillas last Wednesday, the west Cornwall fishermen and their supporters also decorated their boats with red Vote Leave flags and sailed to the Thames to support ‘Brexit’ campaigners. “We have seen a lot of support from our local fishermen,” said Liz Lane, the co-ordinator for Vote Leave in Cornwall. “Last week’s event, even though it was slightly interrupted by Bob Geldof’s actions, has really woken up a sleeping giant,” she said. It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
