Darwin fisherman Daniel Schoolmeester granted bail after allegedly holding workers captive without pay

A fisherman accused of holding workers captive on his boat in the Northern Territory has been granted bail in the Darwin Local Court. Daniel Schoolmeester is accused of forcing at least four people to work on his ship as forced labour and keeping them in servitude. Prosecutor Annabelle Bridgland argued against bail citing the serious nature of the offending. Seabed mining ban – a win for marine life, fishing and culture

The Northern Territory Government first declared a three-year temporary ban on seabed mining in March 2012 and has since extended it twice under both the Country Liberal Party (CLP) and Labor Governments. With the temporary ban due to expire in March, Territorians have made it clear that they want a permanent ban. It’s great to see today the Government listen and act on this important issue. “The Top End has some of the last healthy tropical coasts in the world. Seabed mining is like bulldozing the seafloor. Man die’s from sea snake bite in Australia after being attacked while working on fishing trawler

A 23-year-old British man has died after being bitten by a sea snake in Australia while working on a fishing trawler. NT News, describing the man as a “backpacker”, reports that CareFlight assisted, as well as other ships in the area, to provide medical supplies for emergency treatment. But the man was declared dead after the trawler arrived at the town of Borroloola. The British High Commission has been informed of his death. It may be the first recorded death from a sea snake in Australia, say experts. >click to read<12:48

Safety switch could have saved this young Fisherman’s life from electrocution

7335432-3x4-340x453An inquest into the death of a man electrocuted on a Top End prawn trawler has heard a safety switch could have saved his life. Ryan Donoghue, 20, was using an angle grinder on the deck of Austral Fisheries’ Newfish 1 to cut rusted shackles when he was hit by a wave and electrocuted. Counsel assisting the Coroner, Kelvin Currie, told the inquest the grinder had been plugged into a socket without a safety switch, known as a residual current device (RCD). Newfish 1 was about 11 hours from the Arnhem Land coast when the accident occurred in November 2013. Read the rest here 09:11
