OpenHydro sought over $17 million in tax credits for failed turbine project

The company that placed a 13,000-tonne-turbine at the bottom of the Minas Passage then sought creditor protection has applied for $17,807,391 worth of tax credits. An affidavit filed with the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia on behalf of Open Hydro Technologies Canada Ltd. states that company has filed for $7,360,751 in provincial tax credits under the scientific research and experimental development program for the fiscal years 2015 and 2016. Big dreams for tidal power: Irish company hoping to drop turbines in Minas Passage, expecting some cynicism

Simon De Pietro will have to mend burnt bridges before he can build the world’s largest tidal array. “I expect there to be some cynicism and it’s not a good thing that happened,” said the director of DP Energy, based in Ireland. “But that wasn’t us.” His company’s plan to install an array of five sub-sea tidal turbines and one floating turbine in the Minas Passage with a combined power output of nine megawatts makes him the latest Irish proponent with big dreams for tidal power. The last one was OpenHydro, which went bankrupt days after installing its turbine on July 22 — leaving local companies holding the bag for millions of dollars worth of work and a 1,000-tonne turbine on the seabed. A team brought from Ireland to get it working over recent weeks have determined that it’s not spinning as a result of an unknown mechanical failure. >click to read<

Openhydro receivership leaves murky waters

It’s a tall order for a sheriff: arrest a turbine control centre at the bottom of the. But that’s what a warrant filed with the federal court on behalf of a German shipping company calls on them to do. “It is unusual to have a warrant on a cargo 37 metres below the sea’s surface,” said Marc Isaacs, the attorney who filed the claim on behalf of BBC Chartering Carriers GMBH & Co.KG. “We will have to figure that one out.” There’s a lot of figuring out left to be done as a result of the 1,000 tonne tidal turbine placed on the floor of the Minas Passage by the Ireland-based OpenHydro group of companies that was placed into receivership a week later. >click to read<17:36

The first of two towering tidal power turbines to enter Bay of Fundy next month

XAV101_20160519340671_highThe first of two towering turbines designed by Cape Sharp Tidal to harness the immense power of the Bay of Fundy will be installed next month off the coast of Nova Scotia, an company official announced Thursday. Sarah Dawson, the community relations manager for the project, said one of the five-storey high, two-megawatt turbines built in Pictou by Aecon Atlantic Industrial Inc., will be loaded on a barge during the first week of June and travel around the province until it reaches the test site near Parrsboro. That trip will take a couple of weeks. The new turbines are a bigger and more robust version of a turbine tested by OpenHydro and Nova Scotia Power in 2009 that was heavily damaged by the Bay of Fundy’s powerful currents.
