Fishermen take aim at Emmanuel Macron over proposals for wind farms
Protestors had gathered on Friday in an attempt to voice their concerns against the plans for the wind projects. The protests took place in Le Havre and Cherbourg, with the protestors being made up of predominantly fishermen. The protestors believe that the plans for these wind projects are an ecological disaster, having an impact on both marine biodiversity and their economic activity. “They are going to kill everything. They are going to kill an artisanal industry, it’s catastrophic. ‘It’s not just commercial fishing’ Farage exposes the scale of Brexit ‘DEATH SENTENCE’
Former Ukip leader Nigel Farage told listeners of his LBC radio show this morning that the scale of fishing betrayal goes beyond Britain’s commercial fisheries. The Brexiteer MEP revealed that even British anglers are have been betrayed by the Brexit transition deal agreed with the EU. Mr Farage’s furious remarks came as angry fishermen across the country staged a series of protests against the deal in six different locations. Salmon-farming operations face protests, occupations in B.C., legislative scrutiny in Washington state
A showdown is brewing over Atlantic salmon net-pen farming on both sides of the U.S.-Canada border. Marine Harvest, a major producer of farmed Atlantic salmon in British Columbia, is seeking a court order to evict First Nations women who have occupied one of its fish farms, an order it intends to enforce by police action if necessary, said Ian Roberts, spokesman for the company. Marine Harvest operates 11 open-water Atlantic salmon net-pen farms in the Broughton Archipelago alone, at the northeast end of Vancouver. Ten of the farms have leases that are up for renewal by the B.C. government in June, and two of those farms have been occupied by First Nations people who say they won’t leave until the leases are canceled. click here to read the story 12:04
Kenai River Sportfisherman’s Association Anti-setnet initiative spurs protests
As next Wednesday’s Alaska Supreme Court hearing on an initiative banning commercial setnet fishing in Cook Inlet approaches, tensions grow on the Kenai Peninsula. The Kenai Fisherman’s Association organized two protests this week. Many of those who took part carried signs expressing their opposition to the setnet initiative. But Dave Athons, the retired fisheries biologist who organized the demonstrations, says the main purpose was to express disapproval of the Kenai River Sportfisherman’s Association. “They are a political organization, using conservation as a front,” Athons said.
