Every boatbuilder is busy – Waiting list for fishing boats grows longer

Gordon Campbell says fishermen know before they step through the doors of his shop that they will have to wait a while for delivery once they place an order for a new fishing boat. Campbell owns Provincial Boat and Marine Ltd. in Kensington, a builder of fiberglass fishing vessels. “I’ll not use exact times, but several years,” he described his company’s current wait list for new boats. “The word’s out there: Every boatbuilder is busy. (Fishermen) know they’re not going to get one before the end of the year or for next spring or whatever,” Campbell comments. >click to read<

P.E.I. boat manufacturer switches industries to stay afloat

Prince Edward Island’s oldest producer of fibreglass fishing boats is shifting its focus to another industry. Gordon Campbell and his son Jay own Provincial Boat and Marine Ltd. in Kensington. They say since fewer fishermen are buying boats, it’s time to diversify the business. They have decided to start manufacturing oil tanks for home heating. Read more here 12:32

The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
