Rick Crane’s lobster holding tank gives him more control over selling and holding lobsters

A fisherman and business owner in Cox’s Cove, on Newfoundland’s west coast, has built his own lobster holding tank — one that can hold 48,000 pounds of the crustacean, to ensure he has more control over the selling process. Rick Crane of Crane’s Legacy says he built the tank to remain an independent seller. “The lobster market is like the stock market. It goes up and down, as you could see, like this year, with the lobster buyers not always buying. You can’t always fish and you can’t always sell. With this, this stops that.” The $500,000 lobster pound, which took several years to construct, includes a large water pump that pumps more than 1,400 litres a minute and reaches 300 metres out into the ocean off Crane’s wharf. Cox’s Cove fisherman selling cod to outside markets

Rick Crane was back home Friday after a solo four-day road trip, less than a hour of which was spent selling high-grade catch dockside in Quebec. In about 45 minutes Crane said he had cash in hand from the sale of 2,619 pounds worth of fresh Atlantic cod, which was caught, filleted washed, packed and frozen in 20-pound boxes, loaded on a covered U-Haul trailer, and delivered from fishers he’d teamed up with from Twillingate and Green’s Pond recently. click here to read the story 19:33

From skiffman to skipper: Cox’s Cove man becomes Cold Water Cowboy

The newest skipper to join the cast of Cold Water Cowboys says Discovery Canada threw him into the deep end. Not only was this his first foray into television, but the fisherman was also asked to perform a job he’d never done. “When you shove someone out of a skiff that don’t have a clue, it’s a challenge that’s for sure,” Rick Crane told CBC Radio’s Corner Brook Morning.   Crane said he was first approached by the show when it was looking to cast a young skipper. But, at that time, he had issues with his boat and wasn’t able to film.  Read the article here 12:53
