NOAA ship crashes in Seattle’s Lake Washington Ship Canal

A research vessel with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) crashed Monday while passing through Seattle’s Montlake Cut of the Lake Washington Ship Canal, according to witnesses and a spokesman for the agency. The incident — which resulted in damage to one of the ship’s propellers, hull dents and paint scrapes — remains under investigation, NOAA spokesman David Hall said in an email. The boat, which the agency calls The Rainier, “made contact with the seabed and a concrete wall,” Hall said. No injuries were reported. >click to read<10:50

Biologist slams U.S. vessel for running aground in Witless Bay Reserve

Oil from a U.S. fishing vessel killed a number of birds inside the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve on Friday, and a seabird biologist says the boat had no business being so close to Green Island to run aground in the first place.,, The Canadian Coast Guard’s environmental response team cleaned up Friday, and DFO said no pollution was reported in Witless Bay. Transport Canada is investigating. No oiled birds spotted in Witless Bay area – In a statement Tuesday, the Canadian Coast Guard said its environmental response surveillance flights — and surveys by boat of the area on Saturday along with the Canadian Wildlife Service — confirmed there was no pollution in the area. Meantime, two dive surveys have been completed on the fishing vessel with no sign of diesel or oil leakage. click here to read the story 8/28 16:39

Forty-foot fishing trawler run aground near Powell River

Mounties are investigating after a 40-foot fishing trawler ran aground in a village north of Powell River on Thursday. The vessel ran into trouble and slammed into the marina in the small community of Lund around 10 p.m. According to witnesses, people onboard intentionally crashed into the marina to keep the boat from sinking. Police have remained tight-lipped on the incident, only saying that it’s under investigation. Crews worked to get the trawler off the sea floor on Friday. Video, read the rest here 14:45

F/V Savannah Ray Run Aground in Chiniak Bay, Coast Guard Hoist’s Four Fishermen to Safety

savannah rayA Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew rescued four fishermen from the fishing vessel Savannah Ray after they ran aground in Chiniak Bay near Kodiak Island, Alaska, Monday morning. The helicopter crew hoisted the four fishermen from their grounded vessel and transferred them to awaiting emergency medical services in Kodiak.
