Coast Guard issues violations for illegal fishing near Cape Romain

A Coast Guard boarding team issued fishing and safety violations Thursday to a vessel 19 miles east of Cape Romain, South Carolina. The 44-foot fishing vessel The Long Line was found actively laying and retrieving fishing pots in a prohibited area. The Coast Guard Cutter Cormorant noticed The Long Line crew setting their pods Wednesday night and later retrieving the pods Thursday morning. A Cormorant boarding team conducted a living marine resources boarding and cited the crew for failing to comply with area restrictions. >click to read<23:50

State, federal officials confiscate, sell nearly 3,600 pounds of fish from longline vessel

State and federal authorities seized the catch of a longline fishing vessel and cited seven fishermen for not having valid commercial marine licenses, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources said in a news release today. The Coast Guard cutter Galveston Island boarded the 71-foot fishing vessel Lady Ann Margret earlier this month about 350 miles off Oahu and found the boat’s high seas fishing permit expired last year. Coast Guard terminates two fishing trips for safety violations

The U.S. Coast Guard halted the voyages of two commercial fishing boats Thursday after multiple safety violations were found on each. The Coast Guard Cutter Spencer crew terminated the voyage of the , an 83-foot dredger homeported in New Bedford, after the Spencer’s crew discovered the boat had three serious safety deficiencies. The violations included having no life raft, improperly marked survival suits, and no record of performing mandatory monthly drills. Seattle: Coast Guard stops two commercial fishing boats for safety violations. Why does this happen?!!

The crew of the Coast Guard cutter Wahoo terminated the voyage of the fishing vessel Daybreak in the Strait of Juan de Fuca on Thursday. Law enforcement officers [aboard the Wahoo] observed a lack of life raft, visual distress signals or emergency position indicating radio beacon aboard. There was also an insufficient number of immersion suits aboard. Wahoo’s crew escorted the vessel to Neah Bay. The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
