Dogfish harvest to stay same in ’19 as fishermen seek market

Federal ocean managers are allowing the same level of harvest of smooth dogfish, a small species of shark that members of the East Coast seafood industry have tried to find a market for. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says the smooth dogfish quota will be a little less than 4 million pounds in 2019. Earlier this year, the Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen’s Alliance received a Saltonstall-Kennedy grant of about $37,000 from NOAA for a marketing and promotion project centered on raising the profile of dogfish – including changing the name of the species – to make it more attractive to consumers. >click to read<19:29

Rhode Island Commercial Fishermen asked for input on future of industry

Insight and input from commercial fishing professionals is being sought after for a draft document outlining strategies for the industry’s future. The comment period will last from Feb. 1 through March 16, and an information session for commercial fishing members will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 6 at Whaler’s Brewing from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The document, Rhode Island Commercial Fisheries Blueprint for Resilience, was developed from a two-year process called the Resilient Fisheries RI Project, which included extensive outreach to the commercial fishing industry. >click to read< 10:18

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
