Scuttled! Coast Guard assists Alaska Department of Natural Resources complete response to fishing vessel Akutan

The Coast Guard assisted the Alaska Department of Natural Resources’ response to the disabled and abandoned fishing vessel Akutan near Dutch Harbor, Alaska, Thursday. The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Alex Haley assisted Alaska DNR by towing the Akutan to a scuttling site approximately three miles outside U.S. territorial seas where Resolve Marine personnel, contracted by the DNR, scuttled the vessel and conducted cleanup operations for debris in the water. >click here to read< 15:24

Video: Coast Guard crew says goodbye to the Tamaroa

Forty-four boarded a boat in Cape May early Wednesday morning, including 10 former Coast Guards, to say goodbye to a storied ship with decades of service. The Tamaroa, a 205-foot Coast Guard cutter featured in the “The Perfect Storm,” was scuttled earlier this week 33 miles off of Cape May, becoming part of New Jersey’s artificial reef program. The sinking was delayed numerous times due to rough seas since last October when the state’s Department of Environmental Protection’s had originally planned to sink the ship on the storm’s 25th anniversary.  Click here to watch the video, read the story 12:29

F/V Westward scuttled. She caught a lotta fish, and will for eternity.

IMG_0440The F/V Westward, whose long career focused on catching fish, will now be attracting them. Fuller Marine Services reports the vessel was towed out of Boothbay Harbor, where it has languished for the past few years, and sunk in 100 fathoms of water. Chuck Fuller provided the following statement, as well as photos. “On Saturday, February 6, towed the Westward 32 nautical miles offshore and scuttled her. All pollutants, machinery, and floating material had been removed and the fuel and oil tanks had been cleaned. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued the permit for the specific location after consulting with local fishermen. Read the story here 12:45
