Alaska delegation seeks name change of Russian-water fish sold as “Alaskan pollock”
When you buy Alaska pollock at the store, there’s a nearly 40 percent chance the fish was caught in Russian waters, U.S. pollock producers say. “The problem that we’re facing is that pollock caught by the Russians is also being called Alaskan pollock, which is pollock that is of a more inferior quality,” said Sen. Warren hosts serious, deliberative fishing hearing
Dr. Brian Rothschild, retired UMass professor of marine science and president of the fledgling Center for Sustainable Fisheries, called for a sweeping overhaul of the Magnuson Stevens Act. He made an often-repeated observation that NOAA Fisheries lacks a balanced reading of the 10 national standards set down by Magnuson. “MSA implementation must be based on a balance among all 10 national standards (of MSA) rather than a preoccupation with overfishing,” he said. more@SCT 07:38
Warren set to host fishing reform hearing today
The hearing — which will also include Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska, chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries, and Coast Guard — is designed to rein in input from fishermen and industry advocates. Senator seeks $15M for tsunami debris – Begich – “We have that option right now to do something,”
Sen. Mark Begich said it’s embarrassing that the government of Japan has put more funding toward the debris cleanup than the U.S. government has.
