Friends and loved ones to gather, celebrate the life of Fisherman Douglas William Thomas in Port Alberni September 26th

Doug passed away suddenly as a result of a marine accident off the coast of Vancouver Island. He was a fisherman, gardener, and cook. His hands were in the earth and his heart was in the ocean. From a young age he valued his friends and could not refuse when asked to help. He had an amazing sense of humour and his laugh was contagious. Doug’s last years were spent happily with his Genny rebuilding a home around them and enjoying his life with her. Many are mourning his sudden and tragic passing. Details can be found here 15:47

“Any port in a storm.” – Oregon, California Ports Offer Refuge, Commerce, Community

Often erroneously used by landlubbers as a metaphor for sailing past any situation, dangerous or not, this time-worn idiom can sometimes mean the difference between life or death for commercial fishermen and other seafarers. Fortunately, Oregon and California each offer a network of coastal ports that provide refuge from rough seas, as well as markets for commercial fishermen’s catches and a place to call home. The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
