Lifting all boats: 2018 honorees fight for the future of the New Bedford fishing industry

The year 2018 was like none other for the New Bedford fishing industry. The groundfish industry, already reeling from several decades of species collapse and arduous federal regulations, suffered a crippling setback with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s ban on fishing in Sector 7. The Standard-Times and SouthCoastToday this year are proud to name Cassie Canastra and Kevin Stokesbury as the SouthCoast Woman and Man of the Year for what they have done for the industry that year after year makes New Bedford the Number 1 dollar fishing port in the nation. >click to read<23:12

Op-ed: Bring more electronic monitoring to fishery

camera_view_of_skate_catchIn the sustainable fisheries conference held at Rhode Island College last week, audience members were asked various demographic and opinion questions about the ocean, fisheries, and management that were tabulated and presented on the spot. Unscientific, yes, but very interesting.,, We would like to see electronic monitoring pursued more aggressively, as we consider it superior to human monitors in terms of cost, efficiency and interaction with crew. We believe it will play a part in the ultimate goal of providing a consistent source of reliable data to better achieve the conservation and economic goals of the Magnuson-Stevens Act. I’ll be damned! An editorial about fishing from southcoasttoday! Our View: A bad day of fishing …

We don’t hear much from the newspaper in the highest money port in the nation, another New England port in serious trouble. Shamefully they rarely have any coverage of the issues facing the fishermen and businesses that are dependent on them. They do like those windfarm articles though, and are quite vocal about the “future” of Cape Wind and New Bedford’s anticipated roll in it, which is counter productive to the industry that has enriched New Bedford, the troubled fishing industry.

Our View: A bad day of fishing …Our congressional delegation continues to push for loans to help the struggling groundfishermen and for grants to help those for whom loans will be too little too late.
