Coronavirus: As Canned Tuna Fly Off Shelves, Operations of US Boats Are Compromised

Consumers bracing against Covid-19 have raised demands not only for health and safety products but also for many food staples, including tuna. StarKist Samoa, located in the US Territory of American Samoa, supplies tuna for the US market. “The StarKist Samoa operation relies on the US tuna fishermen, and direct fish deliveries to the cannery are a major component of our business model,” said StarKist Samoa in a statement today. “We have seen an increase in sales that has been attributed to the Covid-19 impact, and we are doing our best to keep up with the demand. >click to read< 10:35

Tri Marine reports drop in purse seiners calling into port

purse seiners amsamTri Marine International says it has seen a dramatic decrease in the number of purse seiners calling into American Samoa since the high seas were closed to US flagged tuna boats in June of this year.  Not only does this affect the supply of fish for StarKist Samoa and Samoa Tuna Processors it also means a loss in revenue for the government and many businesses that supply the purse seiners. American Samoa’s small and developing economy – Closure of fishing grounds helping foreign competitors

Owners of StarKist Samoa, say the National Marine Fisheries Service needs to recognize the unique nature of . They say StarKist Samoa has been directly impacted by the closure of access to the high seas. Michelle Faist spokesperson for StarKist told KHJ News these unnecessary restrictions have driven the purse seine fleet into distant waters where they are now catching fish under a U.S. flag to benefit competitors to American industry. She said as a result, StarKist is forced to buy its fish at a premium with reefer vessels coming in from distant fishing grounds. Read the rest here 12:05

Canneries coping with shipping delays

With the stalemate in negotiations between the union representing dock workers and the Port Maritime Association, and notice of a lockout within a week, there are worries that the shipping situation will get even worse. The biggest employer in the territory, StarKist Samoa, says its operations have been impacted by the slowdown however it doesn’t anticipate any layoffs or changes to its local operations as a result.   Read the rest here 20:36

The American Samoa Government has signed a new lease with StarKist Samoa

The new lease, which has been submitted to the Fono for review, is for 408,203 square feet of land in Atu’u. The old 30-year lease between StarKist and ASG expired last month and it was for 270,126 sq. feet which covers the cannery premises, warehouse net lockers, marine railway, area along the dock, guard shack and below guard shack.
