Recreational fishers file lawsuit against State of N.C, and commercial shrimpers
After following this story for over a year, Recreational fishermen are suing North Carolina and commercial shrimpers, accusing them of diminishing fishing populations in the Pamlico Sound.,, The fishers said once the lawsuit is served to the state and shrimpers, they’ll have 21 days to respond. WNCT reached out to North Carolina’s Dept. of Environmental Equality, The State Division of Marine Fisheries, and The North Carolina Fisheries Association. Nantucket Sound location of most fatal turtle entanglements
By Aug. 1, Chatham fisherman Jamie Eldredge has pulled the 200 conch pots he has in Nantucket Sound. He has made the summer switch to fishing for dogfish in the Atlantic Ocean. In doing so, Eldredge has avoided what has become a major headache for conch fishermen – large leatherback turtles that get tangled up in conch and lobster lines while pursuing jellyfish. In Nantucket Sound, a significant number of those turtles die, three times more than anywhere else in Massachusetts, and state fishery scientists are worried they may be targeted by a lawsuit charging they are not doing enough to protect an endangered species. In a series of public hearings held in coastal and island communities this month, they asked conch fishermen for input on how to deal with the problem. Great White Shark makes return to Cape Cod
The first great white shark confirmed in Massachusetts waters this year was detected off Monomoy on May 28 by a receiver that picked up signals from the animal’s acoustic tag, according to the state Division of Marine Fisheries. The growing population of gray seals on Monomoy and elsewhere on the Cape and Islands draws great whites to these areas. The seals have rebounded since federal protection laws were enacted in the 1970s. continued @capecodtimes
