Coast Guard completes 3 rescues during busy crab season opener

Station Cape Disappointment, along with Station Grays Harbor, launched 47-foot Motor Lifeboat [MLB] rescue crews at 7:30 a.m. for a fishing vessel taking on water near Willapa Bay. A Coast Guard helicopter eventually hoisted three individuals and their dog off their capsized vessel. The crew was then diverted at 9:15 a.m., south in the vicinity of Gearhart, Ore., to assist another fishing vessel with an injured crewmember. Simultaneously, a separate MLB rescue crew was assisting the crew of a 66-foot fishing vessel off the coast of Long Beach, Wash. The initial distress call came in at 9:30 a.m., stating a vessel with five people aboard was disabled and drifting to shore, dragging its anchor. “Fill Our Xtratuffs” Saturday to benefit Westport Coast Guard families

A Westport nonprofit is collecting donations to help keep unpaid local Coast Guard members and their families afloat during the government shutdown. “WeFish is a nonprofit organization here in Westport formed to support the commercial fishing industry,” said board member Adrienne Jones. “We support the fishermen, the Coast Guard supports us, so we want to make sure their families are taken care of in this time of need, while they are missing their paychecks.” >click to read<13:03

Coast Guard rescues fisherman near Westport Marina in Grays Harbor, Wash.

Michael Carroll, 70, was rescued by a Station Grays Harbor boatcrew, aboard a 47-foot Motor Life Boat, and transferred to emergency medical services at the Westport Marina and was treated for symptoms related to hypothermia while being transported to Grays Harbor Community Hospital. A watchstander at Coast Guard Sector Columbia River, in Warrenton, Oregon, received a mayday call from the captain of the fishing vessel Pacific Rim at 3:51 a.m., reporting the vessel was taking on water and listing hard to starboard. The watchstander immediately directed the launch of a MLB crew. Carroll was rescued at about 4:15 a.m. The Pacific Rim is a 60-foot fishing vessel homeported in Westport. At the time of the sinking the Pacific Rim had 250 gallons of diesel fuel on board. Pollution responders from the Incident Management Division at Sector Columbia River are responding. The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
