Mount Pleasant honors late iconic shrimper Capt. Wayne Magwood, with commemorative plaque

The Town of Mount Pleasant will commemorate the life of iconic Shem Creek shrimp boat captain, Wayne Magwood, with a special plaque on Thursday. Captain Magwood was struck and killed by a passing truck while crossing Mill Street at Coleman Boulevard in September 2020. His boat, Winds of Fortune, was a familiar sight on Shem Creek, according to the town. They say he was a passionate advocate for the local shrimping industry and a “great town partner at the Blessing of the Fleet and Seafood Festival for the past 33 years.” Mount Pleasant Mayor Will Haynie and members of town council joined the Magwood family on Thursday afternoon to unveil a commemorative plaque on the new Shem Creek pedestrian bridge. video, >click to read< 18:45

F/V Jamie Lynn stuck ashore due to tides, strong winds, and a needed plan to release her

Feb. 6 when high-speed winds howled through the Lowcountry, a shrimp trawler was pushed into the mud. It remains there until a plan can be made to release it. The Jamie Lynn was anchored on the Mount Pleasant side of Crab Bank and blew onto the bank of the Old Village, just southeast of the mouth of Shem Creek between two privately-owned docks. The boat was purchased by captain Wayne Pye and his fiancé, Jamie Lynn Kennedy,,, According to Kennedy, that’s right about the same time that the shrimp stopped showing up. photos, >click to read< 16:20

Town of Mount Pleasant accepting proposals for leasing of Wando Dock

The Town of Mount Pleasant opened a bidding process to accept proposals for the leasing of the town’s dock facilities on Shem Creek, also known as the Wando Dock. The intent of the bidding process, as stated in the town’s Request for Proposals (RFP), is for an experienced single end user to utilize the premises to provide shrimp/seafood processing operations at the docks, while keeping an appropriate fit in the neighborhood, and other requirements as specified within this solicitation. Town of Mount Pleasant acquires ownership of Wando Dock

The Wando Seafood Dock on Shem Creek has changed hands twice in less than a week, this time its ownership has fallen into possession of the Town of Mount Pleasant. The acquisition was announced Friday on the heels of previous owner Brett Elrod, who closed on the property and then flipped it to the town for $4.35 million. Last August, Elrod entered into a contract to purchase Wando Dock for an undisclosed amount, which encompasses a 1-acre lot and 350 feet of dock space. He signed with the intent of refurbishing its preexisting state of affairs which were in need of repairs and an environmental study. >click to read<17:36

Christmas for the Shem Creek Fleet

Save Shem Creek Corp. teamed up with Shem Creek Fisheries this holiday season to raise money for the Shem Creek fleet. In addition to a BBQ plate fundraiser, Save Shem Creek Corp. started a GoFundMe account to raise money for the fleet. Save Shem Creek Corp. recently held a candidate meet and greet and from that they earned a $1,000 profit. The purpose of the event was not to raise money, according to spokesman Will Bagwell so the board agreed to donate it to Shem Creek Fisheries. “Since the fleet was having such a bad season, we thought there was no one better to give it to than them.” click here to read the story 17:36

South Carolina: 30th on the 30th – Blessing of the Fleet marks start of shrimp season

The 30th annual Blessing of the Fleet will be held April 30 with an anticipated fleet of 13 boats. Continuing the tradition began by the Magwood family, who started the festival in 1988, every year the proceeds from the festival are donated to local nonprofit organizations. The Town of Mount Pleasant has chosen the Charleston Port and Seafarers’ Society and East Cooper Meals on Wheels to receive the net proceeds of the 30th annual Blessing of the Fleet & Seafood Festival. $10,000 donation to help Shem Creek shrimpers stay afloat

The town of Mount Pleasant extended an early blessing Sunday to local shrimpers in the form of a $10,000 donation to help them cover the costs of operating and competing with the global market. Mayor Linda Page says this is the first donation of its kind to a foundation in support of the fleet and Shem Creek fisheries. The goal is for the town to help support the local fleet any way they can. The 13 boats that sit in Shem Creek have been blessed. It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
