Tropical storm Kate to bring high winds, waves to southern Grand Banks

Environment Canada has issued a tropical cyclone information statement for Newfoundland in relation to tropical storm Kate. The weather office says Kate is transitioning to a post-tropical storm and will have no direct effects over land. However, it will give bring strong winds to the southern Grand Banks today. The system is about 720 kilometres south of Cape Race, with maximum sustained winds of 110 km per hour. Its current movement is east-northeast at 56 km/hour. Environment Canada also says waves near seven metres are possible not far from the storm centre. Read the rest here 11:15

Tropical Storm Kate to be fourth Atlantic hurricane of 2015

Tropical storm Kate is likely to become the fourth Atlantic hurricane of the 2015 season on Tuesday afternoon (Nov. 10) as it races northeast away from the Bahama Islands, according to the National Hurricane Center. At 9 a.m., Kate had maximum sustained winds of 70 mph, just below hurricane strength, and was about 350 miles south of Cape Hatteras, N.C., and 600 miles west of Bermuda.On its forecast track, Kate would pass north of Bermuda. But forecasters urged those on the island to monitor its progress, as high surf and windy conditions were possible. Read the rest here 16:29

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
