Local charter suspected of ‘high-grading’ prized halibut

Pacific Salmon Charters got an unexpected publicity boost earlier this month, when the crew of the Pacific Dream rescued passengers from a sunken boat. Last week, the company received not-so-welcome attention from state and federal game wardens. On Thursday, July 13, officers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife served a search warrant at the Pacific Salmon office at the Port of Ilwaco. According to the warrant, Pacific Salmon crews are suspected of habitually “high-grading,” or catching more than the legal limit of fish, and keeping only the most desirable specimens. Investigators say they have evidence that Pacific Salmon Charters crews high-graded on at least two trips during the short spring halibut season. click here to read the story 13:06

Police seek New Bedford fisherman after knife and hammer attack

Police are searching for a 42-year-old city man who hit a 28-year-old man with a hammer and stabbed him in the abdomen on Acushnet Avenue Wednesday morning, New Bedford Police Detective Lt. John Chaves said. A warrant is out for the arrest of , 42, with a last known address of 165 Hathaway St. Hudson is a fisherman, and Port Security was looking for the boat he works out of but the boat wasn’t in port, Chaves said. The warrant charges Hudson with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (knife), assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (hammer) and assault and battery. Read the article here 08:11

The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
