Commercial vessel a ‘total loss’ after Monday morning fire at Westport Marina

The commercial fishing vessel Mary Ann L was a total loss after it caught fire on Float 11 at the Westport Marina early Monday morning. South Beach Regional Fire Authority Chief Dennis Benn said the call came in at 2:45 a.m.; when responders arrived on the scene the vessel was about 5o percent involved in flame. “A good Samaritan was using a garden hose already on the dock, to protect a boat that was next to the burning vessel,” said Benn. Westport Marina ranked 10th in the nation for commercial seafood landings

Westport Marina was 10th nationwide in seafood landings in 2016 with 108 million pounds of crab, salmon, hake and other seafood landed, according to statistics compiled by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Westport placed 14th in the nation in total value of seafood landed in 2016, with a little more than $59 million in product. That is down from $65 million in 2015, due to lower prices in 2016 for many species. “We are extremely proud of our commercial fishing fleet and the hundreds of fishing and processing jobs they support in our region,” said Westport Marina Business Manager Molly Bold. “We are committed to providing the infrastructure, facilities and services our fishing industry needs to continue to thrive.” click here to read the story 07:25

Coast Guard, Washington State Department of Ecology respond to sunken vessel in Westport, Wash.

Coast Guard and Washington State Department of Ecology crews responded to a 41-foot vessel that sank at the Westport Marina, Friday. Coast Guard Incident Management Division personnel, from Coast Guard Sector Columbia River in Warrenton, are monitoring salvage and clean up efforts as Ballard Marine Construction response contractors start to remove fuel from the vessel Saturday. Watchstanders at Coast Guard 13th District Command Center in Seattle received a notification at 12:52 a.m., Friday, from the emergency position indicating radio beacon aboard the vessel Charlotte. A crew from Coast Guard Station Grays Harbor investigated the location of the beacon and found the sunken vessel, while watchstanders were able to contact the vessel owner and confirm they were safe elsewhere. It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
