Coast Guard rescues 2 fishermen from vessel aground in St Mary’s Inlet

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Coast Guard rescued two men after their fishing vessel ran aground in St Mary’s Inlet, Thursday.

A Coast Guard Air Station Savannah MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew arrived on scene and hoisted the two men to safety.

Coast Guard Sector Charleston watchstanders received notification via phone at approximately 12:15 a.m. from the daughter of one of the men aboard the fishing vessel F/V Phuong Mai, stating that the 50-foot fishing vessel ran aground.

The two men were transported to Fernandina Municipal Airport where local EMS was standing by.

“It was an extremely challenging rescue due to a dangerous nighttime environment,” said Lt. Patrick Buckley, a pilot on the case. “The flight mechanic and rescue swimmer executed a 50-foot hoist with zero illumination and we were able to safely transport the men back to solid ground.”

No injuries were reported.

Nassau County Sheriff’s Office also responded.

The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
