NOAA – Their mission

Back in the sixties when I was fishing with my dad we would fish about a one hundred miles east of New Bedford for whiting in the spring. We had a ninety foot dragger. And there were Russian vessels there that were three hundred foot  and they were using a small mesh net that caught everything in the water.

At the time there was no 200 mile limit. The Russians and other foreign vessels could come into our waters and were restricted to within fifteen miles of our coast. Today  no one knows how much damage they did but our fisherman would eventually pay the price.

Finally in 1978, we enacted the 200 mile limit. That was great so we thought, but we created a monster. That being NOAA. Back then NOAA had
approximately 20 Workers in Gloucester. We had a fleet over two hundred and fifty boats, now they have over two hundred workers, and our fleet
is down under seventy five.

How can they justify the amount of workers while our fleet is down to one third, as each day more boats go out of business. Does NOAA care about our fisherman and their families? Which brings me to the reason for my letter.

I went on line to see what the NOAA mission is.

NOAA’s Mission: Science, Service, and Stewardship

TO UNDERSTAND AND PREDICT CHANGES IN CLIMATE, WEATHER, OCEANS, AND COASTS.

TO SHARE THAT KNOWLEDGE AND INFORMATION WITH OTHERS.

TO CONSERVE AND MANAGE COASTAL AND MARINE ECOSYSTEMS AND RESOURCES.

Now after you read the NOAA mission statement >click here<, you will discover there is nothing in their mission statement as to how they will help our fisherman, and their family’s

That brings for the purpose of my letter, which is to request to our Congressman and Senators for a long term finical assistance program to help us survive. We need help now.

I had mention a Fish Bill in previous posts similar the Farm Bill, catered towards the commercial fishing industry, with many fisherman and associations in agreement.

Perhaps if fisherman and associations call those politicians in there state we can get it going.

If any one out there has a solution to our needs please contact me.
