St. John’s, October 27, 2021.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Groundfish Industry Development Council (NLGIDC) congratulates the Honourable Joyce Murray who was recently appointed as Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard.

“The NLGIDC are looking forward to meeting with Minister Murray in the near future to discuss many issues of concern to the Newfoundland and Labrador Fishing Industry”, said James Baird, the chair of the NLGIDC. “At the moment the issue that needs immediate attention is the future allocation and management of the rapidly growing Redfish resource in the Gulf of St. Lawrence”, continued Baird.

The NLGIDC are also pleased that for the first time in forty years our province has two representatives in the Federal Cabinet. Our Congratulations also go out to The Honourable Seamus O’Regan for being appointed Minister of Labour and the Honourable Gudie Hutchings for being appointed Minister of Rural Economic Development.

The portfolios of Fisheries and Oceans, Labour and Rural Economic Development are all important for the continued improvement to the wellbeing and sustainability of many rural communities in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Groundfish Industry Development Council is an association comprised of fish harvesters, the FFAW and a number of NL fish processors representing almost 7,000 industry participants.
