High forecast of pink salmon could overwhelm local fishermen, stress processing capacity

Fishermen in the Pacific Northwest could be blessed by pink salmon runs later this summer after new fishery forecasts anticipate millions of salmon returning to the area starting in late July. Fisheries are predicting up to 34 million pink salmon in our section of water, from the Fraser River down through Puget Sound, thanks to a combination of optimal ocean conditions and a successful out-migration two years ago.  But the fish’s return could also stress a fragile processing capacity in the Pacific Northwest. “There’s little to no processing capacity in the lower 48 states,” said Deb Granger, the interim managing director of the Whatcom Working Waterfront Foundation. “There are people trying to scramble to figure out what they could do.” more, >>CLICK TO READ<< 11:37
