California drift gill nets escape legislative ban; new technology promises to reduce bycatch

Local fishers have won a hard-fought battle against environmentalists working to ban the use of controversial gill nets, which are notorious for snagging unintended victims in their underwater synthetic webs. A bill in the state Legislature that would have likely shut down a local swordfish and thresher shark drift gill net fishery failed its first committee hearing despite widespread support from ocean and environmental advocates.       Nope, too destructive. Just like every other form of fishing, they’ve got something against it…

    I fished on the Trailblazer out of San Diego we got 37 fish that trip best trip the guy ever had we had pingers on the net and did just fine we had no Observer the next trip we went out when we shouldn’t have no Observer again so our captain Marcus Lebec decided to take the pingers off we cut two porpoise one porpoise one dolphin and a monk seal way out of his range but dead in our net pingers work
