NILS STOLPE: The New England groundfish debacle (Part IV): Is cutting back harvest really the answer?
While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling. I’d love to see that you have to show a hundred percent of your income from COMMERCIAL FISHING to get a fishing license and a commercial shellfish diggers permit. That would help the full time COMMERCIAL FISHERMAN and get rid of ALL the part timers or gravy masters. Give them a pecker permit. And have to show your income tax return to prove your a hundred percent COMMERCIAL!!!
How about all the board member show their income , and quit putting so many damn regulations o. The commercial fishing industry
This is a long overdue regulation. Way to many people are supplementing their hobby or retirement at the expense of those who truly need these fish for their survival. Or how about those who receive a payment out of the tax dollars of the very fishermen they hurt? If ridiculously low quotas were not the norm I wouldn’t feel so strongly about this issue. However, every pound landed on these strict quotas by these part timers, is a pound that a real fishing family is not allowed to harvest leading to premature closures of fisheries and a cut in pay to the full time fishermen. Yes. We must come up with a solution to this mess.
