Newfoundland threatens to pull support for Canada-EU trade deal

For Canada to meet the terms of the recently signed trade pact with the 28-country European Union, Newfoundland must jettison what are called minimum processing requirements (MPRs), aimed at protecting local fish plant jobs. Trident Seafoods to acquire Western Alaska Fisheries’ Japanese owned assets

US-based Trident Seafoods has agreed to acquire the assets of Western Alaska Fisheries in Kodiak, Alaska, from Westward Seafoods, which is owned by Maruha-Nichiro. At Asia-Pacific summit, Kerry gives wrong advice for world’s fisheries

But Secretary Kerry gets some key facts wrong here. For one, most of the fisheries of the world are not overfished. In 2014, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) placed that number at 29 percent, and reported that approximately 70 percent of the stocks that they assessed were being fished within biologically sustainable levels. Fish board boosts limits for salmon dipnetters on Copper River

Fishing License Fee’s Going up in Washington State

A new surcharge would be applied to commercial businesses that fish, harvest, sell, buy or process salmon and steelhead. The salmon excise tax would be increased. The Vice Chair of the NFFO South East committee explains how the industry is often wrongly accused of damaging the environment.

The finger is often pointed at fishermen as being the direct cause of any damage done to seabeds in our waters. However, this is by no means the case.
