Congress votes to keep USCG chopper in Newport Oregon

The Coast Guard was preparing to close the facility, where a search-and-rescue helicopter is stationed, on December 15. Coast Guard budget cuts were blamed for the closure. Read the rest here 19:36

Discharge exemption ok’d; USCG Act reauthorized

Hard headed! Banned Kent waterman charged with new violations

A Kent County waterman whose license was revoked earlier this year was charged Tuesday, Dec. 2, by  for violating his revocation by fishing for striped bass. NRP identified the man as Benjamin L. Reihl, 27, of Chestertown. According to NRP, Reihl was seen on successive days working on a commercial boat in the waters off Queen Anne’s County by NRP officers on routine patrol. Singing the halibut blues – Buck Laukitis, commercial fisherman

Why is more of the halibut resource wasted in the Bering Sea than landed and sold? Thirteen out of 14 fish in the Central Bering Sea will be wasted next season. Overall, the entire Bering Sea will only have 2.4 million pounds of halibut that can be sold in 2015, while more than 6 million pounds will be killed and thrown overboard as bycatch. Maine scallop survey shows mixed results

Scalloper sc3675_02LUBEC, Maine (AP) — A Maine state government survey about the density of scallops from Penobscot Bay to Lubec shows mixed results for the fishery. The survey found that the density of harvest-ready scallops was significantly higher in the Bold Coast area in 2014 than in an adjacent area in 2013. The density of harvestable scallops was also higher in the Little Kennebec and Englishman Bay area in 2014 than an adjacent area last year. The survey results say five other areas – Addison, Frenchman Bay, Swan’s Island, Isle au Haut Bay and upper Penobscot Bay – had “poor scallop abundance.” The state Department of Marine Resources performed the survey in April 2014 10:11
