Back Fishing – Former UFC Fighter Cody McKenzie Retires from MMA, Cites Poor Pay and Treatment

Cody “The AK Kid” McKenzie (15-6) retired from the sport of mixed martial arts Thursday evening.  B/R: Now, just for comparison, can you say how much you make commercial fishing in a typical season?  CM: I’ve had seasons where I made $80,000 in three months, and I’ve had seasons where I made $5,000 in three months. Fishing is a flip of the coin, but that’s only three months out of the year, and at least I’m out on the boat. Read the rest here 17:09

Cook Inlet Setnet ban initiative is an anti-salmon initiative

As you’re out shopping this holiday season, someone wielding a clipboard might approach you and ask if you want to save king salmon. Don’t be fooled. The petition being peddled by professional signature collectors throughout the state won’t save Alaska’s iconic king salmon. In fact, it will hurt our great salmon runs and result in smaller harvests for everyone except a small group of Kenai River sportfishing guides, lodges and private landowners. Fishing industry, aviation linked in Alaska from earliest days

After proving itself in the mid-1920s conducting surveys of Southeast Alaska, the airplane found itself unexpectedly increasingly useful to the burgeoning fishing industry in the state. This came as a surprise to many, as it was a largely untested mode of transportation and the region’s weather was so problematic. But as soon as the first flight was made across the Gulf of Alaska in 1925, the numbers were impossible for even the most nervous passengers to ignore. Read the rest here 15:27

Fisheries and Oceans minister says lobster industry’s on the right track

She bases her optimism on the way the industry has responded to the 2008-09 recession and slumping lobster prices, seeking out markets around the globe. Fall lobster prices in 2014 were a buck a pound higher that the previous year. “In the lobster industry, of course, the prices are set by supply and demand. Sharks in Sydney Harbour: the sobering reality

There have been at least 16 fatal attacks in Sydney Harbour since the late 1880’s, all in the summer months of December, January, and February. Hathaway was the last to die. But Paul de Gelder came very close in  February 2009. The navy diver was on a dawn assignment at Garden Island, helping to  test sonar gear  and swimming along the surface on his back when he felt “an almighty whack on the leg”.
