Tragedy avoided: Three rescued from car that plunged into water in Gloucester
Firefighters, fishermen and other bystanders helped rescue three people from a car that plunged into the water at a park in Gloucester, Massachusetts, on Sunday. The car plunged into the water at St. Peter’s Park in Harbor Cove on Sunday morning. Two off-duty firefighters on a boat nearby witnessed the crash, and one immediately jumped into the water to help. Their rescue efforts were joined by several local fishermen and other bystanders at the scene. The pair of off-duty Gloucester firefighters, Deputy Chief Andrew McRobb and Lt. William Doucette called the incident in to dispatch at 10:49 a.m. Doucette entered the water to help several crew members from F/V Tight Lines, a Gloucester-based lobster boat who had broken one of the car windows with a hammer to help free the occupants. more, >>CLICK TO READ<< 19:04
EPIC Comes Out in Favor of ‘Responsible’ Offshore Wind Development, Joins States in Legal Effort to Overturn Trump’s Offshore Wind Ban
A couple of weeks ago, a whole bunch of states and a wind power industry group filed suit against the Trump administration, seeking to overturn an executive order banning new offshore wind power development. This week, at the states’ request, a large group of environmental organizations — including the Arcata-based Environmental Protection Information Center — filed an amicus curae brief in support of the suit. The argue that Trump’s executive order was “arbitary and unlawful,” that wind power is a “critical and growing” source of green energy, and that offshore wind’s supposed threat to wildlife — specifically whales and birds — are “unexplained and unsubstantiated.” more, >>CLICK TO READ<< 09:08
Scottish fishermen fear new EU trade agreement could have a catch
It’s 9am in Peterhead, and most business has already been done for the day. Boxes of fish have been unloaded and sold at the largest white fish market in Europe, and the boats don’t hang around. They’re refueled, the hold is refilled with ice, and then they’re off. So, I needed to walk at a brisk pace to speak to skippers before they headed back to sea. On Monday, a summit between the UK and the EU is taking place in London, and fishing rights are on the agenda. Both sides have abided by the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement since Brexit five years ago. more >>CLICK TO READ<< 07:40
Meaning of ring of the Fisherman Pope Leo XIV will receive during inauguration
The Vatican’s Office for Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff released an image of the new Ring of the Fisherman, which will be given to Pope Leo XIV during his Mass of Inauguration on May 18. Bearing an image of St. Peter, the ring has New Testament roots and significance. In the Gospel of Matthew (16:19), St. Peter was given the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven, and in the Gospel of Luke 22:32, Jesus tells Peter he must strengthen his brothers in the faith and mission. The Ring of the Fisherman thus authenticates the faith and symbolizes the duty with which the first Pope was entrusted. As Peter is known as the fisherman Apostle, the ring is referred to as the Ring of the Fisherman, or the Piscatory Ring, symbolizing the continuous lineage from the first Pope to today. more, >>CLICK TO READ<< 06:48
