Commercial fishing operators say no to US Wind’s money
Commercial fishing operators in Worcester County say they don’t want a penny out of a proposed $20 million relief package from offshore wind farm developer US Wind. “The (Department of Natural Resources) asked us for input, and we’re not negotiating our livelihood. That’s our life. We’re not going to make an agreement to put ourselves out of business,” said Jeanene Gwin, vice president of the Waterman’s Association of Worcester County. Watermen are rejecting the agreement inked last week between US Wind and environmental officials in Maryland and Delaware that aims to compensate the fishing community for negative effects of a proposed wind farm to be located offshore of Ocean City starting at about 11 miles out. more, >>CLICK TO READ<< 11:39
ODDS ARE IN LAKE CHARLES, YOU’RE GETTING THE REEL DEAL ON THE PLATE
When it comes to seafood in Lake Charles, diners have reason to feel more confident than many other markets being tested in the 8-state study being commissioned by the Southern Shrimp Alliance and the Louisiana Shrimp Task Force. New genetic testing shows that 19 out of 24 shrimp dishes sampled at local restaurants were either made with verified wild-caught Gulf shrimp or were correctly labeled as imports—a high authenticity rate credited to Louisiana’s strong Country of Origin labeling laws and active enforcement. That means Lake Charles has a 21% inauthenticity rate compared to states without labeling and enforcement, where the average inauthenticity rate is 78%. The testing was conducted by SEAD Consulting using its patented RIGHTTest™ as part of a regional effort to protect consumers and support the domestic shrimp industry. Technical difficulties: Why NL fisheries union wants DFO to back off on e-log policy enforcement
There have been many complaints from fish harvesters about a new mandatory electronic logbook (e-log) policy being implemented this season, but FFAW-Unifor says it’s time for the ongoing issues associated with it to be addressed. The union that represents fish harvesters and plant workers in Newfoundland and Labrador wants the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans to take immediate action about the contentious policy and the recent seizure of a union executive’s cellphone. Jason Sullivan, FFAW-Unifor’s inshore council vice-president, said DFO violated his privacy when fisheries officers seized his cellphone as part of an investigation into an alleged fishing violation. more, >>CLICK TO READ<< 08:27
