Environmentalists’ lawsuit challenges Trump’s order to allow commercial fishing in Pacific monument

Environmentalists are challenging in court President Donald Trump’s executive order that they say strips core protections from the Pacific Islands Heritage Marine National Monument and opens the area to harmful commercial fishing. On the same day of last month’s proclamation allowing commercial fishing in the monument, Trump issued an order to boost the U.S. commercial fishing industry by peeling back regulations and opening up harvesting in previously protected areas. The monument was created by President George W. Bush in 2009 and consists of about 500,000 square miles (1.3 million square kilometers) in the central Pacific Ocean. President Barack Obama expanded the monument in 2014. more, >>CLICK TO READ<< 16:30

Beyond the Catch: Alabama Gulf Coast fishermen reel in sharks and conservation research

Since the 1890s, Captain David Stiller’s family has been involved in commercial fishing. Now, he is taking the family business to the next level in Baldwin County with Apex Shark Fishing Charters. “My grandpa caught sharks in the fifties and my uncle was the top producer in the country for 25 years,” Stiller told 1819 News. “We’ve been the top producers of sharks in the U.S. for the last 20 years.” Stiller has already caught record-breaking sharks, but he is also helping research one of the world’s oldest and diverse groups of vertebrates. The apex predators are an important aspect of the marine ecosystem across the globe, and Stiller and his crew are ensuring they are around for years to come. Photos. more. >>CLICK TO READ<< 10:01

Brexit fishing fury as France seized British boat ‘in revenge plot’

French authorities seized a British fishing boat in the English Channel in response to UK authorities fining a French boat for breaking maritime rules, it has been claimed. The Lady T, from Eastbourne, East Sussex, was seized by the French naval ship The Pluvier on Thursday for fishing for whelks without a licence. The vessel could be confiscated and its owner slapped with a £63,000 fine for “non-authorised fishing in French waters” by a non-EU boat. Olivier Leprêtre, chair of the regional fishing committee in northern France, noted on Sunday that the small English boat may have been seized in a tit-for-tat process, after a French skipper was fined £40,000 in a landmark case in April. more, >>CLICK TO READ<< 08:52

‘Bring him home’: Hundreds search for missing Down East clammer

The Down East community showed up in hundreds on Sunday to search for one of their own who has been missing at sea for a week. Alton Wallace, 41, did not return home from clam harvesting as planned. His disappearance has been followed by a week of searching by the Maine Department of Marine Resources, U.S. Coast Guard, and hundreds of community members. Jeff Nichols at DMR said officers have been sweeping the Naraguagas Bay with sonar all week. However, nothing below the water provided enough cause for the department’s dive team to search the brackish waters. Video, more, >>CLICK TO READ<< 07:19
