Oldest lobster processing company in Maine files for bankruptcy
Maine’s oldest lobster processing company filed for bankruptcy Tuesday. Cozy Harbor Seafood had been in business since 1980 and is the oldest and most experienced processor of lobster in the U.S., according to the company’s website. A lawyer representing the company said in an email that the company initiated this process to “continue operating while it restructures its liabilities and pursues a court-supervised sale to a new owner.” Going forward, Cozy Harbor’s processing and packing facilities on St. John Street at the Portland Fish Exchange and on Union Wharf in Portland will continue to operate, receive lobster, and whitefish deliveries from suppliers, employ staff, and fulfill customer orders. “Maine lobster and local ground fish keep Cozy Harbor busy year-round producing the best that Maine has to offer,” the website said. North Carolina’s landmark study offers insight into fisheries management, days after ‘Shrimpgate’
In a sweeping three-year study mandated by the North Carolina General Assembly, the North Carolina Collaboratory has released its long-anticipated findings on the state’s coastal and marine fisheries. While the report was intended to be a neutral and science-driven evaluation of fish populations and habitats, it has also become a flashpoint in the debate over House Bill 442, a controversial legislative proposal that aimed to restrict shrimp trawling in state waters. The study’s results, particularly concerning shrimp and southern flounder, offer new data on fishery health but stop short of endorsing any policy like the now-dormant HB 442. “Multiple comments by legislators in both chambers of the North Carolina General Assembly (NCGA), as well as statements circulating in the media, suggested the Senate was aware of the contents of this report and this advance knowledge drove actions to amend the legislation to include a shrimp trawling ban prior to the report’s release,” stated Collaboratory Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Warren in a letter attached to the study. The South Carolina Shrimpers Association released the names of 25 restaurant businesses named in a federal lawsuit accused them of defrauding customers over the source of shrimp they serve. The group has filed an amended suit naming the 25 restaurants it alleged were “found to be outright fraudulent” by actively promoting “local” or “Lowcountry heritage” while serving foreign imports. The lawsuit, filed in federal court and assigned to Federal Judge Richard Gergel, alleges violations of both the federal Lanham Act and the South Carolina Unfair Trade Practices Act.
