‘Deadliest Catch’ captain Sig Hansen won’t face charges in alleged abuse
Celebrity crab-boat captain Sig Hansen won’t face criminal charges on claims that he sexually abused his toddler daughter nearly three decades ago, Snohomish County prosecutors said Tuesday after conducting a review of old case materials. “We have concluded that it’s outside our charging standards and we’re going to maintain our original decision not to charge Mr. Hansen,” Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Matthew Baldock said. Meantime, a civil lawsuit against Hansen brought by his estranged daughter, Melissa Eckstrom, remains on hold until the state Court of Appeals decides whether a King County judge’s ruling that would allow the civil case to go to trial is legally sound. ‘Deadliest Catch’ Faces Its Own Extinction – The crabs are missing in the Bering Sea, and the series may soon have nothing to film.
If Discovery’s “Deadliest Catch” is in trouble, it’s climate change – not ratings – that may hasten the show’s demise. Over the last year, temperatures rose about four degrees in the Bering Sea, which is 50 times the global average. As filming began for the 13th season of “Deadliest Catch,” which premieres Tuesday night, the show’s fishermen had to contend with a serious problem: With warming waters, the crabs have moved elsewhere. “The first thing that you need in order to film a show about crab fishing are the crabs,” said executive producer R. Decker Watson, Jr. “If the crabs don’t show up, then we’re all out of business.” The Alaska Department of Fish and Game sets an annual quota system on crab fishing, depending on a survey they take in the spring and summer. This past year, they found that half the crab was missing, and quotas were cut across the board.“We didn’t know if we were even going to be on the water long enough to film the 20 hours of ‘Deadliest Catch’ for the season,” Watson said. “It became a much more difficult fight for each skipper… It worries me for the future of the fishermen, they’re really having to fight to save their way of life. Estranged daughter sues ‘Deadliest Catch’ star Sig Hansen, alleging she was molested as a child
The estranged daughter of celebrity Alaskan crab boat captain and cable TV star Sig Hansen claims her father sexually abused her as a toddler, while her parents were divorcing nearly three decades ago, according to interviews and court records. As a result of the alleged abuse, Melissa Eckstrom, now a 28-year-old family law attorney in Seattle, contends in a lawsuit that she battled depression, eating disorders, suicidal thoughts and other trauma throughout her childhood. She also claims that she still harbors memories of her father’s abuse of her as a 2-year-old in 1990. “I have memories … of being in a room alone with my father and crying out in pain,” Eckstrom stated in a court declaration. ‘Deadliest Catch’ Season 13: Tragedy, Drama, And Is It End For Two Captains?
Discovery has announced that the Deadliest Catch Season 13 will be returning on April 11. This is the final season for at least one captain, possibly two. Compound it with the emotional tragedy of the Destination and temperatures that are four degrees warmer than last year, means that keeping focused and finding the crab is tougher than before. Captain Sig Hansen appears to be back, but for how long? Captain Jonathan Hillstrand? It appears that the weather has become dramatically warmer, four degrees warmer than last season. It matters a great deal as any of the previous crab hotspots are now gone. The crab have moved to new, more comfortable locations, and the captains, who are under pressure to achieve quotas, need to use all of their skills and instincts to figure out where the crab are located. ‘Deadliest Catch’ cast connection aims to assist fan Patty Valentines fundraiser raffle
Like the beach glass she finds and turns into works of art, Portland resident Patty Valentine met the fishermen and sea captains of the Discovery Channel’s “Deadliest Catch” and turned them into friends — and, with her father Meredith “Zeke” Valentine battling cancer, she can use all the friends she can get. Of course, it helps when friends are also television stars. The story of Patty, her friendship with these sea-faring folks, and how they came to help her and her father started five years ago, when Patty reached out to Josh Harris, captain of the vessel the Cornelia Marie. “His father, Phil Harris, passed away after suffering from a pulmonary embolism, which he then had complications from,” Patty said. “(Those complications) caused a massive stroke, leading to his death.” Read the story here 14:31
2 arrested in assault of ‘Deadliest Catch’ star Jake Harris
Authorities in Washington state said Tuesday that two people accused of beating one of the stars of the TV series “Deadliest Catch” over the weekend were arrested. The Spokesman-Review reported that Amanda Ritter, 30, and Jorel Fultz, 29, were arrested and booked into the Spokane County Jail on suspicion of robbing Jake Harris. Everett police said they received a report of a male victim of assault Saturday after Harris had been found on the side of the road in Everett. Police spokesperson Aaron Snell said personal items were taken from Harris. The TV personality reportedly told police that he and three others were in a car coming back from a casino when a man sitting behind him began to attack him. Read the story here 10:36
Jake Harris of ‘Deadliest Catch’ recovering after severe beating
Jake Harris of television series “Deadliest Catch” is recovering in a hospital after a severe beating over the weekend. Jake Harris’ brother, Cornelia Marie Captain Josh Harris, shared details of his brother’s attack in two live videos on the official Facebook page for Deadliest Catch – F/V Cornelia Marie. Josh Harris said Jake was jumped late Saturday and was in an intensive care unit with a “cracked skull” and brain trauma. The victim’s brother said Jake was beaten and then thrown out of a moving vehicle onto the side of the freeway. People in a car behind the suspects called 911 to get help. Josh said Jake had gotten a ride home from a couple who had been at the Quil Ceda Creek Casino near Marysville, but it was unclear if that’s where Jake had met the couple and where the actual beating took place. ‘Deadliest Catch’ Season 13: Sig Hansen to do cameo appearance to help ratings of the show?
Season 13 of the reality series “Deadliest Catch” will be one of the toughest seasons yet. Rumors are swirling that FV Time Bandit is also out of the show and it forces Captain Sig Hansen to make cameo appearances to help in the ratings. Suddenly the real-life adventures of fishermen from Alaska have turned into a battle for survival for the show itself. Captain Josh Harris of the FV Cornelia Marie has decided to cut ties with the show as Discovery do not see his storyline generating interest. It is not clear though if indeed Captain Jonathan Hillstrand and the Time Bandit got cut from the show. ‘Deadliest Catch’ Season 13: Captains Bill Wichrowski and Keith Colburn’s life more appealing than Josh Harris?
Discovery Channel’s “Deadliest Catch” season 13 is already up for production and already a captain is not coming back. Rumors are swirling that the lives of Captains Wild Bill Wichrowski and Keith Colburn are more appealing than that of Josh Harris. “This a critical year, because a lot of those boats are up for contracts because they thought the show was only to run for 10 years, myself included,” Wichrowski said. “This is my contract year. I’m seriously trying to get Zack into the wheelhouse and that’s going to take a little time. So we’ll see what happens. Aside from Captain Wichrowski, another Captain is also adjusting to his life these days after his divorce. Nick Tokman hails from Massachusetts, a state whose shoreline once teemed with whaling barks — the homes of men who, seeking fortune in whale oil during the 19th century, ventured to sea for years at a time, each hoping to capture their “lay” or percentage of a catch, while risking their lives in the black squalls of the North Atlantic, the high seas of the Indian Ocean, and the farthest reaches of the remote Pacific and Arctic whaling grounds. But Tokman isn’t from New Bedford or even Nantucket, where as a teenager he caddied to help pay his way through the prestigious MacDuffie School. He is instead from Springfield, nicknamed “The City of Firsts” — an appropriate place for a man of many beginnings. After high school, the then-18-year-old headed to business school at Concordia University’s John Molson School of Business in Montreal, where he learned to speak French while earning his degree and working as a suit salesman, janitor, and pizza delivery driver. Deadliest Catch Captains Making Mischief for charity at The Captain’s Whiskey Slam
In what may very well be the most chest-hair-growing partnership in modern memory, Fremont Mischief Distillery has teamed up with Deadliest Catch celebrity crab captains Sig Hansen and Casey McManus, as well as co-captain Josh Harris, to make whiskey for charity at The Captain’s Whiskey Slam. Fremont Mischief’s new rye whiskey, Storm Tossed Rye, is a special batch that has been barrel-aged aboard Sig Hansen’s Northwestern and Casey McManus’ and Josh Harris’ Cornelia Marie. The whiskey batch, aged on the two different boats, is going head-to-head in true Deadliest Catch competition style. The goal is to sell all of the Storm Tossed Ryewhiskey between the release date, August 20, and October 1 in order to donate $40,000 to Seattle’s Fisherman Memorial and Sea Scouts’ Propeller and Yankee Clipper educational vessel efforts. Deadliest Catch Comes to Oregon
Deadliest Catch has been a mainstay of the Discovery Channel for over ten years. It shows the working conditions of crabbers in the North Pacific who fish for king crab and snow crab out of ports like Dutch Harbor and St. Paul. Now the show is coming to the Pacific Northwest. Discovery Channel is now launching a spinoff titled Deadliest Catch – Dungeon Cove. It’s based in Newport, Oregon and it will follow the commercial dungeness crab fishery (even though there is no Dungeon Cove). There has been discussion in the past few years or so about just how deadly is the “Deadliest Catch,” and perhaps this debate was the reasoning behind this spinoff. The Northwest dungeness commercial- crab fishery, however, is still seeing high rates of injury and death compared to other fisheries in the United States. The Northwest coast is particularly rough, and dungeness crab are commercially fished in the winter (similar to Alaska commercial crab seasons) when the weather is at its worst. ‘Deadliest Catch’ Contract Renewals For Captains Sig Hansen, Bill Wichrowski, Others Due This Year
Contract renewals are coming up for Deadliest Catch Season 13. Several of the veteran captains who fans have come to know and adore are due to sign on for another season, but will any of them back out? On the Season 12 finale, Sig was told by the doctor in Anchorage that if he wants to prolong his life, he needs to make serious lifestyle changes. Work-related stress and smoking cigarettes were the reasons of his heart attack. As a commercial fisherman, stress is unavoidable. Will this culminate in Sig not renewing his contract for another season of Deadliest Catch. Capt. Bill Wichrowski was asked about his thoughts regarding the contract renewals in an interview this week. It happens! ‘Deadliest Catch’ Skipper Sean Dwyer busted for gear infraction
“Deadliest Catch” star Captain Sean Dwyer is in trouble with the law. Alaska’s Fish and Game officials fined Dwyer for some issues with his crab-catching equipment. The rules states that crab pots must have an 18-inch flap to allow the crab to escape, should it find its way back into the ocean. Dwyer’s crab pot only had a 15-inch flap, which has reportedly been fixed. The reality star reportedly paid $1,500 in fines and is now on probation for two years. Dwyer is the youngest captain of the Brenna A ship at 24 years old. It’s his first season with the hit Discovery series that has been airing for 12 seasons. Read the rest here 17:56

Staging A Storm Scene! ‘Deadliest Catch’ Writer Caught In Blatant Fakery Scheme!
Of course the Kardashians have shamelessly staged scenes for their “reality” show — The Hollywood Reporter accused the gritty Discovery channel hit, featuring seasoned fishermen including Sig Hansen and Josh Harris, of faking a terrible storm in the 4th season premier. On the 2008 episode, “mammoth waves smashed an Alaskan crab fishing boat called the Wizard, sending large swells crashing over its deck,” writer James Hibberd wrote. “Inside, alarmed crew members discover that their stateroom is flooding with incoming seawater.” Adding even more fuel to the fire, the site even discovered an alleged “outline” from the episode. Former “Deadliest Catch” cast member headed to court on child porn charges
A local man once known for his role on the popular reality TV series Deadliest Catch series now faces some disturbing charges in Spokane County after he was caught with child pornography with girls as young as five years old. Paul Albert Edgren was a cast member for two seasons of Deadliest Catch, the Emmy award winning show on the Discovery Channel. He starred in six episodes between 2010 and 2011 as a deck hand on the Wizard, the crab ship captained by Keith Colburn. Die-hard fans of the show may remember Edgren left the crew to pursue a mountaineering career. He came back to Spokane and, according to court documents, three years later, a cyber tip from the Center For Missing And Exploited Children led detectives to his South Hill home. ‘Deadliest Catch’ Captain Admits He’s Afraid Of The Ocean And Can’t Swim
The Hyena’s at TMZ mock the Skipper – Would you believe one of the “Deadliest Catch” stars is actually “afraid” of the ocean and is unable to swim? Captain Sig Hansen of the F/V Northwestern admitted to TMZ on camera that he’s the “last guy” who wants to go into the ocean. “I’m afraid of the ocean,” Sig said. “The last guy that wants to go in there is ME. I can’t swim.” That’s one for the ages. An ocean boat captain who can’t swim? You’d think there might be some kind of test for that you have to pass in order to be a certified captain. The Saga continues on ‘Deadliest Catch’ “It’s official: Elliott’s out, Jake’s in!
Capt. Elliott Neese is officially off “Deadliest Catch” season 12 and Capt. Jake Anderson will take over the Saga. According to a tweet by Discovery, Neese won’t be on this season. The network wrote on Twitter Thursday: “It’s official: Elliott’s out, Jake’s in: 5 days til #DeadliestCatch”. In an interview Elliott gave recently, he said he wasn’t going to be on “Deadliest Catch” so he could focus on himself after his stint in rehab. Last year he battled serious alcohol and drug problems and it affected his work aboard the F/V Saga. He was seen throwing temper tantrums and taking his frustrations out on the crew. Capt. Sig Hansen, the chain-smoking, coffee-chugging star of the Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch, has survived a brush with his mortality. Hansen’s daughter, Mandy Hansen, shared a photo on Instagram of her father in a hospital bed with a caption reading: “Capt survived the ‘widowmaker’ !! Beating a heart attack ain’t easy. Discovery Channel is spinning off its “Deadliest Catch” series, with a new series that explores the lives of Dungeness crab fishermen and their families in and around Newport, Oregon. “Deadliest Catch: Dungeon Cove,” which the network says is a working title, is set in one of the last remaining fishing towns along the edge of the Oregon coast, heading north to British Columbia an area that has earned the dubious distinction of being crowned Graveyard of the Pacific. Flashing his boyish smile, 29-year-old Dan Borovina of Washington said he is used to living on the edge but it is not the place where he has found his greatest adventure. He is a who has worked calamari in Southern California, sardines in Oregon, herring off Kodiak and salmon in the southeast of Alaska. Autopsy reveals “Deadliest Catch” Skipper Tony Lara suffered a heart attack in his sleep
Mead County Sherrif Ron Merwin said that the autopsy showed scar tissue on the 50-year-old reality star’s heart, which “is consistent with the effects of a heart attack.” Even though this was likely the case, they are still waiting for the toxicology report to come back. No signs of drugs or alcohol were found in his system at the time of his death, though. Lara was a veteran crab catcher and was the ship captain on the Discovery Channel show. Former ‘Deadliest Catch’ Cornelia Marie Captain Tony Lara passes away in Sturgis
Tony Lara passed away in his sleep in Sturgis, South Dakota. Tony was a captain that Josh and Jake leaned on, after their father Phil Harris passed away. Captain Lara was only 56 years old. So far, there is no word on the cause of death, but the story is still developing. Tony Lara was a crabbing veteran, who had his own freighting business. For 10 years, he worked on the Cornelia Marie in the 1990s. He ran the boat for salmon tendering. Tony was a good friend to Phil Harris. He and Phil built the Cornelia Marie into being the crabbing boat that fans came to know on the “Deadliest Catch” series. Read the rest here 12:29
Deadliest Catch’s First Female ‘Intimidated’ Salty Dogs
Greenhorn Amy Majors is the first female shipmate to join Discovery Channel’s “Deadliest Catch.” She sat down with FOX Business Network’s Stuart Varney, along with Captain Keith Colburn, to discuss why she wanted to hit the rough seas. “I’ve been a fisherman my entire life.
