‘Deadliest Catch’ – A test for crab-fishing rookie Amy Majors – “There were definitely certain times that I questioned my sanity,”

Alaska native Amy Majors, who was born into a fishing family in Ketchikan, wants to prove to the world and the crabbing industry that she’s tough enough to trawl for hard-shelled gold in the most dangerous icy waters on Earth. “Fishing is in my blood, and I’ve been doing this kind of thing my whole life. But crabbing on the Bering sea is different — far wilder and more dangous than anything I’d ever done before,” says Majors, whose seafaring father took her aboard his commercial fishing boat when she was just 12 hours old. phil harris greatest reallity tv starOnline competitions are often nothing more than a popularity contest — where a show can mobilize its fans to get out the vote before the polls close. Phil Harris — a rock star of the Bering Sea crab-fishing fleet who finally got the chance to know his sons, Josh and Jake, when they became deckhands on the Cornelia Marie — dominated each round: He won the Hero title (with 73 percent of the vote), breezed through the semifinals (with 46 percent), and ultimately defeated Hell’s Kitchen’s Gordon Ramsay in the final (with 86 percent). DEADLIEST CATCH: 7 Things We Hope to See (or Not) in 2015!

We Hope NOT to See: Mandy Hansen.  Speaking of greenhorns, we really would rather not revisit Mandy on the Northwestern this season.  Read the rest here 13:19

5 Insane Things ‘Deadliest Catch’ Leaves Out About My Job

Basically, the ocean wants you dead. If you wind up going overboard, the odds are heavily in the ocean’s favor — you’ve got roughly 20 minutes of useful survival time in water under 41 degrees Fahrenheit, even if you’re the world’s best swimmer. And there are just so, so many ways you can wind up in the water. First of all, while it’s not shocking that a fishing boat can sink, what is shocking is that it can happen in seconds,, Read the rest here 15:35

Time for ‘Deadliest Catch’ to go home

To average Americans sitting in front of their televisions, “Deadliest Catch” is an interesting documentary in a historically ignored industry. However, there has been a big problem developing in one of Alaska’s most iconic fisheries as a result of the show and legislation known as Bering Sea Crab Rationalization. It’s obvious why the show has enjoyed such success, and I commend the captains, crew and boat owners who have been involved in the series over the last decade. But the fleet that appears on “Deadliest Catch” is creating a problem for the 65 or more other crab boats whose crews depend on the Bering Sea crab resource for financial survival but don’t appear on television. Bering Sea Opies and the reality of the Deadliest Catch….Chris Miller

When I started fishing at the age of seventeen, I remember hearing stories from other fishermen about two fabled Alaskan fisheries: Bristol Bay gillnetting and Bering Sea crabbing.  The huge waves, back breaking work, insanely long chris millerhours, weeks at-sea, and the crazy characters that the fisheries attract.  I heard many first-hand, second-hand, and no doubt completely made up stories of fortunes earned and lost, feats of strength, and freak storms taking all hands aboard……….. What an excellent read, and some exceptional photography! Read more, and click his link’s!
