2 West Coast commercial fishing vessel mishaps included in NTBS Safer Seas Digest 2016
The National Transportation Safety Board cited two mishaps involving vessels around Ventura Harbor among 27 marine-related boating accidents as part of its Safer Seas Digest 2016. The agency’s annual report, released online Thursday, is part of an effort to help improve safety in the boating industry. “We hope that (the report) continues to help the marine industry discuss and address the safety issues confronting it,” said Robert Sumwalt, the NTSB’s acting chairman, in the 2016 Safer Seas Digest.The mishaps mentioned in the report include a July 29, 2015, collision in which the captain of a commercial fishing boat, Ferrigno Boy, lost control of the boat as it maneuvered near the Ventura Harbor Boatyard. Abandoned Fishing vessel runs aground in Katmai National Park
KATMAI NATIONAL PARK AND PRESERVE, Alaska – The National Park Service says a fishing vessel abandoned after a fire last month has run aground at Katmai National Park. The park service said Saturday the Northern Pride was found between Cape Chiniak and Kaguyak Point along the Shelikof Strait. The 82-foot wooden vessel’s crew abandoned ship on April 21. The Coast Guard rescued the three-member crew. The vessel capsized shortly after and was believed to have sunk. Read the rest here 07:34
Coast Guard rescues 3 Fishermen from life raft near Kodiak, Alaska
A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew rescued three mariners after a fire started on board their 82-foot vessel north of Kodiak Island Tuesday. The Jayhawk crew hoisted the mariners from their life raft in Stevenson Entrance, approximately 60 miles north of Kodiak, and transported them safely to Kodiak. “We couldn’t fight the fire, it was too smoky; it was scary,” said Scott Beckstrom, captain of the Northern Pride.
