Over 20-Million Sockeye Harvested in Bristol Bay – Mike Mason
The sockeye harvest in Bristol Bay has topped 20-million as the run has exceeded the pre-season forecast. Sunday’s harvest was 954-thousand sockeye to push the season total to just over 20-million.,,Now looking at the latest escapement numbers. Read more here 11:06
Latest BBSRI Forecast Puts the Bristol Bay Sockeye Run at 38-Million
Catches appear to be tailing off at the Port Moller Test Fishery but there appears to be a sizable tail left to this year’s sockeye run. This has led to an updated in-season total run forecast of 38-million sockeye. Listen, and read more here 16:22
Alaska’s Salmon Fisheries are One Step Closer to MSC Certification
Another step has been taken towards getting Alaska’s commercial salmon fisheries recertified as sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council. Last fall the MSC sustainability certification of Alaska’s commercial salmon fisheries was allowed to lapse after most of the major seafood processors that operate in the state pulled their support. However, the Purse Seine Vessel Owners Association stepped up to serve as the client for getting the fisheries recertified. more@kdlg 20:52
Record Breaking Salmon Harvest This Year in Alaska
The commercial salmon harvest this year in Alaska has set an all-time record due primarily to huge returns of pink salmon. The latest statewide total from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game puts this year’s salmon harvest at over 269-million fish. more@kdlg 15:08
