Hearts are heavy once again in fishing communities in southwestern Nova Scotia – and throughout the province – as people grieve another tragedy to befall the lobster and fishing industry. A Monday, Dec. 26, fishing trip resulted in the loss of a young fisherman who went overboard that morning off Cape Sable Island. The search for a fisherman who went overboard Boxing Day morning off Cape Sable Island in Nova Scotia has been suspended. The search effort was called off at noon AT Tuesday, according to spokesperson Lt.-Cmdr. Len Hickey of the Halifax’s Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre. The Coast Guard on Monday morning responded to a call for a man overboard from commercial fishing vessel F/V Blue Wave, a scalloping vessel belonging Blue Harvest Fisheries. CEO Keith Decker said the vessel returned to port Tuesday morning, where crew members will meet with Coast Guard officials. He said they are waiting for the investigation to determine what happened. Mi’kmaw community requested a crab season opener delay from DFO prior to boat sinking

The fisheries manager for Elsipogtog First Nation in New Brunswick says the community asked the Department of Fisheries and Oceans to delay the opening of the crab season days before a boat capsized off Cape Breton killing two crew members. Some question if early crab season is to blame for FV Tyhawk tragedy

Concerns are being raised about what an early snow crab fishing season could mean for smaller vessels after a boat capsized on Saturday off the coast of Cape Breton, N.S. The Tyhawk belongs to the Elsipogtog First Nation in New Brunswick. Four of its crew members were rescued from the water but one, identified by community members as Seth Monahan, died. The Coast Guard suspended its search Friday for a man last seen aboard a fishing boat north of St. Matthew Island Thursday. The man, whose name was not available Sunday, fell off his boat, a 40-foot salmon trawler named the “Ricky Leboy,” about 7:45 p.m. Friday, said U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Athena Stricker. Now the task of raising the ship has begun, and a commercial salvage operation is currently underway to lift the vessel off the bottom of the bay and tow it into shallow water. The Coast Guard looked for Jerry Barkley, the replacement captain for the 62-foot steel fishing vessel, for 12 hours before suspending the search. Lt. Kevin St. Pierre said a survival model was used to help them decide how long the search should go on, which included what clothes Barkley was wearing and the water temperature.
