Geoff Diehl cruised around the Port of New Bedford in an RV Tuesday that maneuvered in and out of small entrances and exits. The red, white, and blue mobile home featured the slogan of the Republican U.S. Senate candidate, ” The Real Diehl,” as he looked to learn the reality of the fishing industry in the area. Diehl made four stops in the area, which began with Mayor Jon Mitchell and concluded with a meeting with three members on the board of Sector 9 as well as the sector’s lawyer. Questionable Management of Commercial Fisheries – US Senate candidate R.I. State Rep Bobby Nardolillo

Point Judith: State Representative Bobby Nardolillo, a GOP Candidate for the US Senate in 2018, made a formal statement today on the plight of the Ocean State’s commercial Fishing industry. In it he concentrated on recent efforts to restrict the federal quotas of Atlantic Menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus). The long statement was summed up by Nardolillo this way: “Menhaden is an important species in the commercial catch. Political overseers such as the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission have used demonstrably faulty science to needlessly restrict this catch in our waters. Relief from this untenable restriction is needed not only by commercial trawlers but also by ordinary Rhode Islanders who ultimately consume the protein this catch. click here to read the press release 13:04

The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
