It seems that at least every 5 years I’ve got to return to the dispute of overfishing vs. other factors responsible for depleted fish populations. I surely wrote about it on this page in 2002, 2007 and 2012. Now, with a feeling of déjà vu, I’m back at it.,, The trigger was a letter sent to me by my friend Cormac Burke in which a British Fisherman Skipper (ret) M W Jackson wrote to Fishing News. The Gulf of Maine: Poster Child for Global Weirding?

gulf_of_maine1Since it’s snowing this evening, again, I though I’d write something on climate, which I know is not weather. As so often, the great state of Maine, seemingly peripheral, turns out to be central, in this case because of the Gulf that bears its name. Climate, ecosystem linkages explain salmon declines in Maine rivers (lot’s of wacked out comment’s at the article!)

Today, Maine’s rivers flow cleaner than they have in decades. Dams are being torn out, both on the Kennebec and Penobscot rivers. Salmon should be flocking back. Or should they? more@portlandpressherald
