A legal dispute over the sale of boats owned by Carlos ‘The Codfather’ Rafael is heading to court
Carlos Rafael, whose fishing operations were based out of New Bedford, Massachusetts, was once the owner of one of the largest commercial fishing operations in the U.S. Rafael was sentenced to nearly four years in prison in 2017 for dodging quotas and smuggling profits overseas. The case against Rafael included forced divestiture of his assets,,, Rafael complied, but a New Bedford fish auction house sued him with a complaint that he didn’t honor a right of first refusal agreement to buy boats. If Trump Doesn’t Revoke ‘Illegal’ National Monument Created By Obama, The Courts Might
Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke recommended President Donald Trump change the boundaries or management of 10 national monuments, including ocean monuments created by the Obama administration. Zinke asked Trump to allow commercial fishing at Obama-designated ocean monuments in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, but five of those monuments the Department of the Interior reviewed could be declared unlawful. Earlier this year, the Pacific Legal Foundation (PLF) filed suit against the Trump administration on behalf of New England fisherman opposed to the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts monument off the New England coast. click here to read the story 14:03
Salmon management suit moved to Alaska
Alaska Journal of Commerce – The lawsuit over salmon management was recently moved to Alaska district court. Judge Reggie B. Walton granted the request to move the lawsuit to U.S. District Court for the District of Alaska May 3. The National Marine Fisheries Service, or NMFS, and other defendants in that suit had asked for the location change in February. continued
