Fishermen’s union takes fight to Minister Tootoo, story and video

The United Fishermen and Allied Workers’ Union is hoping residents of Prince Rupert can dust off their pens, stamps and notebooks and put them to good use in the coming days. The union (UFAWU-Unifor) was hard at work last fall, rallying North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice, Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen, the City of Prince Rupert and the District of Port Edward to support them after ), a division of the Jim Pattison Group announced the closure of salmon canning operations at its Oceanside Plant. While they received sympathetic voices in all those representatives, mayors and council members, UFAWU is taking the fight federally. Read the article here 12:08

Cullen to ‘take a run’ at Canfisco fishing licences

From the article: Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen was on his way to Paris this week for the COP21 Paris International Climate Conference, but before he left, he mentioned a plan of action to help the Rupert workers try and regain gainful employment canning salmon. “I want to take a run at these fish licences. I don’t believe it’s right – we’re issuing licences to catch fish with no conditions at all and those fish are now being moved off to China and everywhere else for processing,” said Cullen last week. It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
