MPAs – DFO will stifle lucrative industry by stuffing fishermen into new eco-box
I never thought I’d become a fisherman growing up. I always wanted something bigger. To make a real difference, you know —so after graduating top 10 in my class at Barrington Municipal High School, off to Acadia University I went, with no real direction, just thinking that there’s got to be something better than fishing out there. It took me three semesters, but I figured it out. There wasn’t.,, Our federal government has made some sort of an agreement on an international level to protect important habitat here off our coast. So I’m thinking, “Great, that’s super news, right? Fish forever, right?” >click to read<11:32
A follow up to yesterday’s Somethin’ ain’t adding up here – NSEDC fisheries dispute with long-time critic gets nasty
Fisherynation Featured writer and Groundswell Fisheries Movement’s Stephen Taufen sent me an email last night with an article attached that he wrote that ran in Alaska Report that should be read when looking at the history of Alaskan CDQs and of course, the history of Tim Smith and Norton Sound Economic Development Corp (NSEDC). 2012 07 31 NSEDC fisheries development committee meeting – Published on Aug 13, 2012 On July 31, 2012 at the request of Norton Sound Economic Development Corporation, Tim Smith was ordered to leave a public meeting for openly recording the meeting. The policeman alleged that recording violated Alaska’s Eavesdropping law. NSEDC president and CEO Janis Ivanoff subsequently published a letter in the August 9, 2012 Nome Nugget newspaper accusing Mr. Smith of a variety of misdeeds leading to his expulsion. As you can see from this video clip, none of what Janis alleged actually happened and Alaska has no law prohibiting a person attending a public meeting from recording. you tube video
