We need to hang on to the fundamentals of the act, while improving monitoring, data collection systems — for both commercial and recreational fishing — and bycatch accountability. I recognize that this bill does create a good framework for the regional fishery councils to implement electronic monitoring and stresses the importance of cooperative research, but it also dismantles some basic requirements to achieve healthy fish populations by building in exemptions and loopholes. CHATHAM: Striped Bass Regulations Okay with Local Commercial Fishermen
While the new regulations will have an impact on supply and demand of striped bass, one local fishing official (?) says the regulations needed to be put in place. “It’s a good move. iT had to be done,” said Ray Kane, outreach coordinator for the Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen’s Alliance. “Commercial fishermen realize it has to be done.” Read the rest here 07:59
Groups hope MSA update won’t move fish conservation ‘backwards’
A number of regional fishing associations are joining forces to strengthen the Magnuson-Stevens Act. The Sitka-based Alaska Longline Fishermen’s Association announced last week (9-9-14) that it’s reached an agreement with the Alaska Marine Conservation Council and several east-coast industry groups to form the Fishing Community Coalition. Trawlers clean out coastal herring
CHATHAM — Like many who represent Cape and Islands fishermen, Alex Friedman, the president of the Dukes County Fishermen’s Association, started getting calls a week ago that eight large vessels, operating in pairs, were towing large nets the size of football fields between them and cleaning out the herring just a few miles east of Cape Cod.
