Fishers suffering from seal boom, Senate committee hears in Newfoundland and Labrador

The Canadian sealing and fishing industries have been left to sink or swim while booming seal populations on the Atlantic Canada coast deplete fish stocks and disrupt marine ecosystems, the Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans heard on a recent fact-finding mission. The committee took its in-depth study on the effects of Canada’s seal populations to Newfoundland and Labrador from September 11 to 13, 2023. N.L. pledges $2M to seal hunt

The government of Newfoundland and Labrador pledged $2 million Wednesday to support the seal hunt this year – a move animal welfare advocates called a “bailout.” Two processing plants, Carino Processing Ltd. in South Dildo and . in Fleur de Lys, will each receive a loan of up to $1 million toward the purchase of seal meat, pelts and fat from the 2015 harvest. “These loans will help to ensure income for sealers and processing workers throughout the province and support the long-term viability of fish stocks off our shores,”  Read the rest here 07:47

Baker: Seal processor Carino won’t need government loans in 2014

CBC_News_logoCarino Processing Ltd., based in South Dildo, received loans from the government of Newfoundland and Labrador in 2012 and 2013 to help the company purchase seals from harvesters. Dion Dakins, CEO of Carino, told CBC Radio’s Fisheries Broadcast that the loans have been repaid in full, and this year the company can carry on as per usual. Read more here  08:22
